We are a broad-based coalition of national, state and local conservation groups striving to protect rivers from the rising tide of sewage pollution. As a crucial first step toward this goal, together we seek to win passage of legislation in the U.S. Congress that will help reduce the annual number of human illnesses and deaths from contact with sewage by requiring public notification of sewer spills and overflows into waterways.
Through this collaborative effort, we also seek to advance and expand the river movement’s collective knowledge and experience on sewage pollution threats to our nation’s rivers. Our motto: Many Rivers. One Voice.
Act for Healthy Rivers has its roots in an earlier collaborative effort, which culminated in the creation of the Citizen’s Agenda for Rivers: A Grassroots Movement to Protect and Restore the Health of Our Rivers and Watersheds. Created by and for the river movement, the Citizen’s Agenda for Rivers set forth proactive steps for decision-makers to keep America’s rivers healthy. That broad agenda is now entering a new phase with Act for Healthy Rivers, focused on a signature campaign to fight sewage pollution.
