ALERT-100,000 Gallon Sewage Spill into the New River

Regions Southeast

I just got this message from the New River Foundation that I wanted to pass along. Have a great Thanksgiving:

"We were hoping to take advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday season to express our thanks for your friendship and support in restoring and protecting the New River. However, we must use this opportunity to relate some unfortunate news instead.

Due to a lift station failure aboard Camp Lejeune, approximately 100,000 gallons of raw sewage were discharged into our beloved river yesterday. The State has closed portions of the river to shellfishing effective immediately. New River Foundation immediately contacted our media resources so that the public could be made aware of the danger to their health.

Of course we are very concerned that with the beautiful weather we are experiencing and many of our neighbors having time off of work, river traffic will be high this weekend. Please feel free to forward this email to any of your friends and neighbors who might be out on the New River this weekend so that they can be aware of the potential dangers.

Brian Wheat, your New RIVERKEEPER®, will be out on the river today, working with the press as well as collecting data on the spill. If you have any questions, please contact the NRF at 910-937-0877 or the RIVERKEEPER® directly at 910-526-3933.

Please accept our wishes for the happiest Thanksgiving, and know that our appreciation for your support lasts all year long!"
