Sewage spills threaten drinking water, spoil recreation, hinder economic values, and harm wildlife. River advocates across the nation are fighting the rising tide of sewage pollution.
I don't think we covered this spill in Arcade Creek Sacramento, CA a month or so, but KCRA 3 News film crews caught some pretty dramatic video what a sewer main breach looks like. be
And now the Spills of the Week:
Honky Tonk Funk: Major sewage backup in one Nashville neighborhood has caused a sticky mess. The problem points to an old system that cannot handle an abundance of storm water and sewage at the same time. The rain that fell across Middle Tennessee at the beginning of the week caused quite a mess. "It was just constantly flowing," said resident Linda Gorrell. Residents had to live with the sight and smell of raw sewage in their yard. The aging system has been a problem for some time. After the rain, the amount of sewage spilled tripled. Officials said that until the system is fixed, the sewage would backup again in another heavy rainstorm.

After School Sewage Pool: Gallons of sewage spilled out of a tank this week, flooding the Snoqualmie Valley Youth and Activity Center in North Bend, WA. City officials say some rags plugged a pipe at the sewage treatment plant next door, causing a tank to overflow. "I think that they said air, water and time will solve some of this problem, so we'll have to, but the cost is going to be pretty high," said Joel Yoker, a youth center board member.

Poor Mrs. Robinson: When Lyndy Robinson walks outside, she faces a disgusting sight. "I have to come home and smell and look at feces, manure in the air," Robinson said. That's because raw sewage is bubbling out of her neighbor's yard and its gross. Cornelius asked her landlord for help and even called in the public works department but "They said there wasn't anything they could do because the lines were so close to the house. They said if they tried pumping it out, it would back up inside the house, which it does already," Cornelius said. Her husband Jeff came into contact with the sewage and said "The water was as black as it could be. I asked my wife what was it, and she said it was sewage water. And I was standing ankle deep in it." Their toilets are also unusable. "My children could not run freely because of poop! And I'm not talking little pieces of toilet paper," a neighbor complained. Let's build more houses!

Parents, Don't Fret: A plumbing problem caused a sewage back-up at an elementary school last week in Michigan. Allegan County officials said a burst pipe leading to a field. The area was fenced off and water tests showed drinking water was not contaminated. Until the break is fixed, health department officials suggested school officials keep the fence up, bring in sand to form a berm around the leaking area, and send a letter to parents informing them that their child's school is contaminated with sewage but everything is most likely ok. No worries.

Right to Know What?: The putrid smell of wastewater greeted drivers on Route 1 in Tamuning, GU yesterday after manhole covers were overflowing in the street. Portions of the nearby beach area were closed after the sewage got into the water that many spent the day swimming in. NICE! David Stone, a local resident of Tamuning, said was frustrated because the wastewater got into a popular swimming spot, but no signs were put up to warn swimmers of what was in the water. "There were no signs on the beach. There should have been signs on the beach warning swimmers," Stone said.
