Sewage spills threaten drinking water, spoil recreation, hinder economic values, and harm wildlife. River advocates across the nation are fighting the rising tide of sewage pollution.

We are currently suing the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) for sanitary sewer overflows from 1995-2001 and from 2002-2006 (2 separate lawsuits). We also serve on the Citizens Advisory Committee for MMSD, the Technical Advisory Committee on SSOs for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the Technical Advisory Committee for the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission for the Regional Water Quality Management Plan Update. We also monitor permit compliance of all POTWs in the Milwaukee River Basin, and advocate aggressively for compliance with the Clean Water Act. Sanitary sewer overflows and combined sewer overflows are fairly common in the Milwaukee area due to too much inflow/infiltration into the sewers, crumbling infrastructure, and capacity issues during wet weather.
