In 2004, Santa Monica Baykeeper settled a $2 billion lawsuit with the City of Los Angeles for illegal sewage spills. With the nation's largest collection system, the City committed to an ambitious 10 year program of system upgrades. The second year of the settlement agreement and the resulting infrastructure upgrade has resulted in a 80% reduction in spills. In 2006 the County of Los Angeles spilled raw sewage in Santa Monica Bay and due in part to Baykeeper's advocacy, paid a $2.5 million dollar fine. The sewage spill problems plaguing Los Angeles are significant and ongoing -- but Baykeeper is working to for change.
