Sewage spills threaten drinking water, spoil recreation, hinder economic values, and harm wildlife. River advocates across the nation are fighting the rising tide of sewage pollution.
If it wasn't bad enough that Florida's gambling cruise-to-nowhere industry is allowed to dump millions of gallons of sewage into the ocean waters just a few miles off shore from some of Florida's most popular beaches, now the state is sending sewage to the coral reef.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has regrettably approved a plan to build a new ocean discharge pipe that will dump sewage onto an ecologically sensitive coral reef. Sewage effluent is a major source of ammonia and other nutrient pollutants that fuel coral killing algae blooms. Surfrider Palm Beach is following this issue carefully.
For a state that depends on its thriving coastal communities that host millions of beachogers every year Florida's sewage dumping habits are sending its tourism economy straight down the toilet.
