Spills of the Week October 12

Josh Klein's picture

With all the problems Milwaukee has with sewage the last thing they need are drunk drivers crashing into sewage treatment plants. Amanda Berth of Sheboygan, WI is real lucky that when she drove her car through a security fence and crashed into the Sheboygan Wastewaster Treatment Plant that all she suffered was a concussion and a broken leg. After all, her accident could've put her on the list below.

Now for the Spills of the week:

Chipee-ew Falls: Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District say at least 9000 gallons of sewage spilled into Under wood Creek at Wauwatosa form a break in a sewer line.
- October 5, 2007: Chippewa Herald - Chippewa Falls, WI

Ja-scuzzy: Residents likened the sewage bubbling up the sight of sewage percolating out of manhole covers to bubbles in a Jacuzzi only that the sight and smell was absolutely disgusting. Authorities estimate that 10,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Verde Cruz creek. County sewer crews say household grease likely caused the leak by causing a blockage in the underground pipes.
- October 6, 2007: CBS 13 - Sacramento, CA

Where Did Poo Come From?: Authorities are scratching their heads about how raw sewage is getting into Vacaville, CA's stormwater lines. It is estimate that for the last two years human waste has been flowing through the storm lines due to the mislabeling of sewage lines at the Kaiser Medical Center. So kids: stay out of Horse Creek.
- October 6, 2007: The Report - Vacaville, CA

Pollution Duluthion isn't the Solution: Heavy rains in Duluth, MN caused the city's sewer system to overflow. Rains like Minnesota's been seeing coupled with the city's "leaky sanitary sewer system" led to big problems. At least 7 sanitary sewage overflows occurred in Duluth and Proctor when the flow rate hit 150 million gallons per day (the average peak flow is 30 million). Advisories have been issued for Lake Superior.
- October 9, 2007: Duluth News Tribune - Duluth, MN

Clumps Leak from Clamp: A repair clamp failed on a force main in Howard County, MD spilling sewage in a nearby stream. Authorities stated that given the rural location of this overflow site, public contact is unlikely. Notification signs were posted.
- October 9, 2007: WJZ News Channel 13 - Baltimore, MD

Hitting the Bricks: Authorities condemned an apartment complex in Richmond, VA after eight inches of raw sewage flooded the basement of the building. The building's 30 resident were forced out of their homes and into hotel rooms until the clean-up and repairs to their building are completed.
- October 10, 2007: WRIC TV 8 - Richmond, VA

No Trip to the Beach: The beaches in Sanibel Island, FL have been closed for weeks due to elevated bacteria levels. Authorities are just now discovering the cause and it ain't pelican poop. It's, you guessed it, sewage. Area business's are especially troubled by the beach closures. This week the island is celebrating Ding Darling Days, an annual birding and ecotourism event that marks the start of tourism season. Beaches that will make you sick puts a bit of a damper on the celebration.
- October 11, 2007: The News-Press - Fort Meyers, FL

Mystery Mess: (This will sound familiar -see #3 on this week's list) A section of Oil Creek in Hanover, PA that was teeming with wildlife a fish has been destroyed by a persistent sewage leak into the creek. Authorities have discovered sewage discharging from stormwater pipes, but since the city has separated sewer lines they are baffled about how this is happening and are having trouble locating the exact source of the sewage leak. Here's the worst part: "‘The man from DEP told me that people shouldn't go in the creek,' Small said. ‘It is on private property but kids go back there and wade around trying to catch crayfish. There was no effort made to tell people to stay out of the water.'" It's a good thing Rep. Todd Platts supports the Right to Know Bill.
