Putting an End to Miami's Dirty Sewage Secret

I couldn't agree more with the sentiments of Mary Rawl from Friends of Billy Creek about South Florida's dirty little sewage secret. "It is a disgrace in this day and age when we have the technology to clean and treat sewage that we still dump into our waters. And Southeast Florida, especially since it is in a severe drought, could be using this sewage as reuse water in an area where 50% of potable water is used for irrigation!"

Fortunately, it looks like the Florida legislature is looking into taking action to stop Miami-Dade's daily dumping of 300 million gallons of "lightly treated" sewage into the ocean. This is a problem that's been going on for years but for the most part has remained under the radar. Ericka Davanzo from the Surfrider Foundation spoke out on in favor of the measure. "State Sen. Burt Saunders is very adamant to see a go forward to address this problem," said Davanzo
