Sewage spills threaten drinking water, spoil recreation, hinder economic values, and harm wildlife. River advocates across the nation are fighting the rising tide of sewage pollution.
This alert was received this morning from the New River Foundation in Jacksonville, NC:
We had another sewage spill this week. This time it's 2.1 million gallons into Chaney Creek. As I get more info I'll send it on to you. You can see the location of the spill on this map.
There's a bright red Confirmed Pollution point where the lift station failed. Evidently 3 separate monitoring systems failed and allowed this massive spill. (map image after the jump)

Thanks for the post,
Thanks for the post, Josh.
I'd like to point out that our Pollution Tracker GIS map at www.imrivers.com/newriver is provided under a partnership with Wansoo Im and IMRivers.com in support of the Muddy Water Watch project.
Due to the drought and low flow, the fecal bacteria counts in Chaney Creek were 10 times the maximum for safe human contact even before the spill. Obviously pumping over 2 million gallons of raw sewage into a creek caused numbers that were off the charts yesterday. We are still waiting on today's test results. We'll forward when we get them.
Thanks again for all that you do,
Tess
